Some of the north-east’s top musicians will be returning to Royal Deeside this summer to show off their talents and celebrate the heritage of traditional Scottish folk music. Live music sessions will take place in various pubs and hotels in Royal Deeside as part of special two and a half month programme, during July, August and September. For full list of dates please see below.

Organised by the Royal Deeside & Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation (DMO), many of the sessions are informal music and social events, which are open to all. Many of the musicians will be from the Royal Deeside area.

John Carnie, Tourism Manager, with the DMO adds that "this year we have built on the Deeside Session events which took place last year and have extended the programme into July. We have added a few Open Mic events where musicians will be able to take the stage and these events will also have well seasoned musicians such as Paul Anderson and Frieda Morrison helping out and playing as well.

We have also been working with Feis Spey and have been pleased to add a number of Ceilidh Trail events into the programme. The core programme will be the informal traditional music sessions where musicians and singers are welcome to come along and take part in an informal atmosphere. Very often, visitors to rural Scotland expect to hear traditional music in the pubs but are disappointed when they learn that most folk session take place in the bigger cities. We are delighted to be able to present for the second year running an exciting programme of sessions for the Deeside area."

Royal Deeside has historic musical connections, fiddler James Scott Skinner was born in Banchory and is often described as ‘the greatest violin exponent and composer of Scottish National Music’. The area also has a strong singing and piping tradition. The Deeside Sessions 2010 events  will be held throughout July, August and September aim to celebrate Royal Deeside’s musical roots and give visitors a memorable experience of the area.

The Deeside Sessions project has been PART-FINANCED BY THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT AND THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY [Rural Aberdeenshire) LEADER 2007-2013 Programme and Aberdeenshire Council.
