There has been a small settlement at Aboyne since at least the 17th century, but the present day town really started taking shape in the 1820s when a major new bridge was built over the River Dee. A few years later, the arrival of railway and the establishment of a top quality golf club turned Aboyne into a popular Victorian country resort town. It is a typical and attractive Royal Deeside village and lies on the edge of the Ciarngorm National Park - the largest one in Scotland.
The town spreads out from a large open village green – venue of the annual Highland Games - which creates a real sense of space in the town centre. There is a good selection of shops and restaurants as well as places to stay, and the town is the focus of the annual Aboyne and Deeside Festival held every July and now in its 17th year.
Close by, the 25,000 acre Glen Tanar Estate lies amidst spectacular Highland scenery with facilities that include waymarked footpaths, cycle routes, horse riding, salmon and trout fishing, landrover safaris and a Countryside Ranger Service at the Braeloine Visitor Centre. There are also seven Holiday Cottages on the Estate that sleep between 2 and 11 people.
