The International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) has recently awarded Scotland the Worlds’ top mountain bike destination for the second year running. Ballater, Royal Deeside lives up to this accolade and is an ideal location from which to explore natural trails and various purpose-built centres.
Our Top Ten listed here is more of a ten to choose from to give you a feel for the variety of offering for cyclists visiting Royal Deeside. Experienced or beginner cyclists have a good choice for an extended visit. Ballater to Aboyne [or vice versa] Round trip 24 miles/ 39 km
This route uses the old Deeside Railway and is easy to follow although mountain bikes are recommended. It is off the road - though road crossing is required. Good facilities exist in Aboyne and Ballater for lunch or afternoon tea. If traveling team handed, in a mixed ability group, the route could be easily curtailed at Dinnet, which is about the half way point between the two towns. Dinnet also has a very respectable tea room and the Loch Kinord Hotel. If the weather is fine there are a number of places to picnic en route.
Glen Quoich Circuit Round trip 8.7 miles/ 14km
Fairly easy mountain bike route but with two river crossings - be mindful of recent weather conditions and cross with care! Park at Linn of Quoich Car park which is you reach by heading west towards LInn of Dee from Braemar. Continue from Linn of Dee until you reach Linn of Quoich car park. This route is mainly on Landrover track. Cross the bridge in an easterly direction and then turn left. You are heading north up Glen Quoich with the river on your left. You will cross Quoich Water and then turn and head west crossing Allt na Dubh ghlinne then head south with river on your left. Woods, heather moor and riverside.
Route should take 3 to 4 hours. Braemar has good facilities. Be well equipped and have some food with you!
